Not every package needs to fly by plane. If you are sending dozens of pounds of clothes, books, or tools and you are not in a rush, a sea package costs a fraction of the air price. But so that you are not surprised by the delivery date or customs duty, read this guide to the end.

Sea package vs. air package — when to choose sea

Sea wins on price. At a rate from $0.69 per pound, a 50-pound package costs about $35 for transport alone. Compare that with air — the same weight by air is over $120. The difference becomes even greater with heavier shipments.

Sea loses on time. The standard time is 4–6 weeks, which in practice means that a package sent at the beginning of March will arrive before Easter — but just barely. Before Christmas, the last safe date to send is usually mid-October. Sound familiar? Most people discover this too late.

How to pack so that a sea package survives the journey

A sea package spends several weeks in a container on a ship. It can be exposed to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and physical shocks. That is why packing is more important than with air shipping.

A few rules: the carton must be rigid and new (do not reuse an old Amazon box). Wrap glass and delicate items in bubble wrap separately. Pack clothes in plastic bags — moisture at sea can do its job even in a sealed container. Right next to the warehouse on Cox Street in Roselle, I saw cartons that arrived with paper fillers — the contents smelled musty. Bubble wrap and plastic bags cost pennies but save the shipment.

What about customs and customs clearance

The rules are the same as for air: personal packages with a value of up to 40 EUR pass through without duty. Above that — the customs office contacts the recipient. The difference is that sea packages are more often “large” shipments, so it is easier to exceed the value limit.

Note — this is important: the declared value must correspond to reality. Understating the value is a common practice, but if a customs officer opens the package and decides that you declared $30 for equipment worth $300, the fee will be charged on the real value plus a fine.

What to pay attention to when choosing a company for sea shipping

  1. Own warehouses on both sides of the ocean — a company with its own warehouse in the USA (for consolidation) and in Poland (for customs clearance) has full control over the shipment. Intermediaries mean longer time and higher risk of loss.
  2. Help with packing — a good shipping office offers cartons in various sizes and helps with packing. This is not a whim — a well-packed sea package is one that arrives in one piece.
  3. Shipment tracking — even if the package is sailing for four weeks, you should be able to see what stage it is at.
  4. Experience on the USA–Poland route — a shipping company that has been operating for decades on this specific route knows the procedures, deadlines, and potential problems better than a new player on the market.
